Is Your Vehicle Getting Louder?
Exhaust problems often give you a few clues that something has changed.
A suddenly louder engine is one of the easiest exhaust problems to recognize, but it isn’t the only sign. Exhaust components are exposed to heat, moisture, road debris and changing weather conditions, and problems can develop anywhere along the system.
Signs to watch for:
Louder-than-normal engine or exhaust noise
Rattling, hissing or popping sounds
Exhaust smells inside or around the vehicle
Visible rust, holes or damaged components
Parts hanging lower than normal underneath the vehicle
Reduced engine performance
Changes in fuel consumption
Check engine or emissions-related warning lights
Some exhaust concerns affect little more than noise, while others can involve emissions, engine performance or exhaust gases entering areas they shouldn’t.
If something has changed, an inspection can show us where the problem is and how much of the system is affected.
Exhaust System Diagnosis & Repair
Find the problem, assess the system and repair what’s required.
An exhaust system runs from the engine to the rear of the vehicle and includes several components, connections and sensors along the way. Damage, corrosion, leaks or component failures can each produce different symptoms.
Depending on what we find, exhaust service may include:
Exhaust system inspections
Exhaust leak diagnosis
Muffler repair or replacement
Pipe and connection repairs
Catalytic converter diagnosis
Exhaust manifold inspection and repair
Gasket and seal replacement
Oxygen sensor diagnosis
Hanger and mounting repairs
Emissions-related diagnosis
We look at the condition of the complete system before determining the repair. That is particularly useful on older or higher-mileage vehicles, where corrosion or wear may be present in more than one location.
Once we know what we’re working with, we can explain the findings and provide an estimate for the recommended service.

Exhaust Leaks Are Worth Investigating
A small change in sound can sometimes point to a larger issue.
Exhaust leaks can develop at connections, seals, pipes or other components throughout the system. Where the leak is located matters. A problem toward the rear of the vehicle may behave very differently from one closer to the engine or passenger compartment.
Changes in exhaust sound or smell should therefore be investigated rather than diagnosed by sound alone. If you can smell exhaust inside the cabin, avoid unnecessary driving and have the vehicle assessed promptly.
The exhaust system also works alongside engine management and emissions controls. Problems involving sensors, the catalytic converter or leaks at certain points in the system can affect vehicle performance and trigger dashboard warning lights.
Automotive Experience That Goes Beyond the Exhaust

Exhaust Service FAQs
-
A change in exhaust volume can be caused by a leak, damaged pipe, muffler problem or another failed exhaust component. An inspection can locate the source and determine what needs to be repaired.
-
That depends on the location and severity of the leak. Because exhaust gases can be hazardous if they enter the passenger compartment, suspected leaks should be inspected promptly. If you smell exhaust inside your vehicle, avoid unnecessary driving.
-
Rattling can come from a loose or damaged exhaust component, heat shield, hanger or internal component. The location of the noise needs to be identified before determining the repair.
-
Yes. Certain exhaust and emissions-related problems can trigger a check engine light, including issues involving oxygen sensors, catalytic converter performance or other monitored systems.
