An inspection may be one of the steps required before you can register it.
Not every vehicle coming into B.C. requires an out-of-province inspection. Requirements depend on the vehicle, where it was previously registered and whether an exemption applies.
If your vehicle does require an inspection, you may be preparing to:
Register a vehicle brought into B.C. from another province or territory
Register a vehicle previously registered outside Canada
Complete the required inspection as part of the B.C. registration
process
Have a used vehicle inspected after moving to British Columbia
Address any issues identified during the inspection
Have the vehicle reinspected after required repairs are completed
When an inspection is required, it must be completed by a licensed inspector at a B.C. Designated Inspection Facility.

What Does an Out-of-Province Inspection Cover?
The vehicle is assessed against B.C.’s required inspection standards.
An out-of-province inspection is a standardized safety inspection rather than a general mechanical checkup. The inspection follows requirements established under British Columbia’s Vehicle Inspection Program and examines safety-related systems and components throughout the vehicle.
Depending on the vehicle, the inspection includes areas such as:
Braking systems
Steering components
Suspension
Tires and wheels
Lighting and electrical equipment
Windshield, glazing and mirrors
Vehicle structure and body components
Exhaust system
Safety equipment
Other components required under the provincial inspection standard
If the vehicle meets the applicable requirements, the inspection documentation can be used as part of the B.C. registration process.
If an issue is identified, we’ll explain what did not meet the inspection standard and what needs to be addressed. Winn Automotive is also a full-service automotive repair facility, so many required mechanical repairs can be completed here before the vehicle is reinspected.

Before Your Inspection
A little preparation can make the process easier.
Bring your proof of ownership and any other vehicle documentation you have been provided as part of the registration process.
It’s also worth checking the basics before your appointment. Burned-out exterior lights, damaged glass, worn tires and dashboard warning lights are all things you may already be aware of before the vehicle arrives at the shop.
If you’re unsure whether your vehicle actually requires an inspection, confirm the requirements with your Autoplan broker or the appropriate B.C. registration authority before booking. Requirements can differ depending on where the vehicle was previously registered and the circumstances under which it is entering the province.

No. There are exemptions under B.C.’s vehicle registration and inspection rules. Whether your vehicle requires an inspection depends on factors including where it was previously registered and whether it qualifies for an exemption.

Proof of ownership must be provided before the inspection begins. Depending on your situation, you may also have other registration or import documents associated with the vehicle.
